The Eisenhower Matrix , named after U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, ranks specific tasks by importance and urgency to prioritize them more accurately. His famous quote about time management, “I have two kinds of problems: urgent and important,” gave rise to the name of this strategy.

Note : Although he said this in his 1954 speech, Eisenhower was actually quoting university president Dr. J. Roscoe Miller.

The aforementioned Microsoft report also suggests that 68% of people don't have enough uninterrupted focus time during the workday. The good news is that the Eisenhower Matrix can help you identify the most important tasks and focus on them.

How to implement the Eisenhower matrix

There are four categories or quadrants, which are divided into two columns (labeled “urgent” and “non-urgent”) and two rows (labeled “important” and “not important”).

How to implement the Eisenhower matrix

To use the Eisenhower Matrix , write a to-do list and then color-code the tasks into their quadrants (e.g., red means urgent, green means eliminate). Eliminating unnecessary tasks first can also help you focus better and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

2. Use time blocking with the Pomodoro technique, but experiment with the duration
The Pomodoro Technique is a time-blocking exercise developed by student Francesco Cirillo. When organizing his college study schedule, he used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer to focus on one task at a time.

Narrowing your focus and working in short bursts can help you maintain higher concentration levels and reduce the likelihood of mental burnout.

The original technique dictates that time blocks (or "Pomodoros") should be 25 minutes long, but that may not be the optimal length for you. Instead, experiment with shorter or longer blocks until you find the limit that works for you.
