Racial equality is a growing issue and companies need to take a stand urgently. With a multicultural audience engaged with various social causes, it is the responsibility of brands to reflect the consumer, who seeks to feel represented. And, if attracting and retaining the public is not enough reason for companies to act, there are also statistics that can convince them:
Statistically, more diverse companies have better results, as different people are able to bring surprising solutions.
“ Companies with greater gender diversity in leadership positions are 21% more likely to deliver results above the market average. In the case of ethnic diversity, this number rises to 33%” (McKinsey & Company, 2018)
“Good Lobbying”
It’s not just individuals who pressure companies to take actions that improve the status quo. Banks, organizations, investors and even government programs benefit and even prioritize brands that demonstrably invest in diversity.
Anti-racist actions for 365 days a year
There is no point in promoting a discourse on diversity if the viber data organization does not invest in racial and gender equality. This is called Diversity Washing, a fallacy that is easily detected and looks very bad. Below are some actions and practices that should be adopted not only on dates like Black Awareness Day, but all year round.
Change from the inside out
The first step that organizations must take towards racial equality is to promote ethnic diversity from the inside out, enabling the hiring of black and/or brown people, ensuring equal pay and conditions so that these professionals are not only part of the team – they must remain on the team and progress in their careers. To do this, it is necessary to invest in mentoring, sponsorship and development programs for black talent.
Another way to strengthen equality is to look for suppliers with ethnically diverse leadership. Your company can also practice “good lobbying”!
“Change will not come if we wait for someone else or another time. We are the ones we have been waiting for. We are the change we seek.” – Barack Obama
Raising awareness throughout the year
Organizational culture should be permeated by practices that raise awareness among employees. Giving prominence, especially to black women, in lectures, training sessions and workshops on racism and ethnic-racial inclusion are excellent ways to address the issue within the corporate environment.
Organizing events that value Brazilian Afro-descendant culture is a way to raise awareness and break taboos, in addition to developing rich activities involving history, religion, music and, why not, cuisine? Keep an eye on the calendar to take advantage of related commemorative dates and promote relevant films, books and personalities.
